Lung function linked to dementia
A recent scientific study (Link) looked at more than 3.7 million person-years and found that when someone’s lung function decreases, the person has a higher risk of getting dementia. This includes both Alzheimer's dementia and vascular dementia. The study measured lung function using different tests, like the forced expiratory volume in 1 second, forced vital capacity, and peak expiratory flow. They think the reason why lung function affects dementia risk has to do with certain chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, how much oxygen blood can carry, and some specific chemicals. The researchers also discovered that changes in lung function can affect the brain's grey and white matter, which are affected in dementia. So, it's important to take care of lungs not just for breathing but also for keeping the brain healthy!
Moreover, dementia patients can benefit from regular exercise and walks outside so that they are providing enough oxygen for their brains.
